Working out – from home

Yes, you may be stuck at home for any number of reasons but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep fit and strong!

For those days when you can’t get out the door, you need to have a back-up plan in place – that is, something that you’re ready to switch to at a moment’s notice. 

 

If gym or a neighbourhood jog is not an option why not try an online training app. There are many apps and wellness programs that include “digital gyms” to keep you fit and motivated.  Many of the workouts can be done in a backyard or even the balcony of an apartment.

 

If you’d prefer, you can try functional training such as bodyweight exercises like crunches, push-ups and lunges or simple exercises you can do at home. 

 

1. Get skipping. Skipping rope is an excellent aerobic workout and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can break a sweat. Due to the high-intensity nature of it, you’ll get the same results skipping for a few minutes that you would doing a 30-minute moderate workout. According to a Science Daily report, “this aerobic exercise can achieve a burn rate of up to 1300 calories per hour of vigorous activity, with about 0.1 calories consumed per jump.” 

 

2. Step up your game. If you live in a building with an open and available staircase, use it if it won’t disrupt anyone else. Start with a couple of flights and increase your pace as you continue, (just make sure to change into appropriate shoes).

 

3. Try handstands. If you have a wall you can stand up against, you have another exercise option. Practising handstands is a fun activity that builds up serious arm and core strength recruiting dozens of muscles in your body. Give it a go and you’ll be sweating bullets after a few minutes. 

 

4. Get out of your comfort zone. There are any number of exciting exercise “how to” videos on YouTube for you to try covering anything from yoga and calisthenics to tai chi. These are usually also available from beginners through to expert level.

 

It may be tough but your health will thank you for it.  No sweat?  Why not!
